マレーシア大使館で多民族社会の文化を学ぶ（フィールドワーク実習報告vol. 1）｜英語英文学科

2022年8月16日〜18日の3日間、国際コミュニケーション履修コースのゼミの活動として、私たちはフィールドワーク実習を東京で行いました。この実習での学びについて５回に分けて、報告したいと思います。
実習の初日、私たちはマレーシア大使館を訪問しました。今回の訪問までに、ゼミの授業でマレーシアの基礎的な知識を身につけ、マレーシアの芸術文化に関するウェブイベントにも参加し、準備に励みました。
今回対応してくださったのは、一等書記官のタンゲスワリ・パレスワランさんでした。女性外交官であるタンゲスワリさんは”Call me T!” と言って、私たちをとても温かく受け入れてくださりました。マレーシアの歴史や社会文化、政治経済に関する基本情報や大使館の役割に関するティーさんのご講演を聞き、質疑応答では全員が興味を持ったことについて質問しました。ティーさんはまた、ウクレレを演奏しマレーシアの歌を実際に披露してくださり、“ラササヤン”というマレーシアの歌を私たちも一緒に歌いました。最後に、さまざまな種類のマレーシアの伝統衣装の前で記念撮影を行い、和みある雰囲気の中で訪問を終えました。
この訪問を通じて、マレーシアに関する知識だけでなく、マレーシア大使館の方々の温かさも感じることができ、忘れられない貴重な機会となりました。ビザ発行や難民対応の機関という大使館に対する先入観があったので、大使館訪問の直前まで学生全員が緊張していました。ところが、マレーシア大使館ではその国の文化を教えたりするアウトリーチプログラムがあり、異文化交流ができる場であるという発見がありました。大使館の方お一人お一人のホスピタリティを感じたことで、最初に抱いていたその緊張は解けていました。今回の経験は、今後の学びを大きく進展させるものとなるでしょう。
We went to Tokyo for fieldwork training for three days (from August 16th to 18th) as our seminar activity of the International Communication Course. On the first day, we visited the Embassy of Malaysia in Japan.
Until our visit to the Embassy, we had acquired basic knowledge of Malaysia in our seminar classes and participated in web events related to Malaysian arts and culture.
Ms. Tangeswari Paleswaran, a female diplomat and the first secretary, welcomed us and said, “Call me T!” very warmly. We took her lecture on basic information of Malaysia's history, society, culture, politics and economy, and the role of the embassy. Then, all of us asked her in English about what we were interested in. One of the most memorable things is her performance with the ukulele and Malaysian songs. After she sung a few songs with the ukulele, she gave us an opportunity to learn a famous Malaysian song, “Rasa Sayang” to sing together. We enjoyed singing. At the end of the program, we took commemorative photos in front of various types of Malaysian traditional costumes in a warm atmosphere. We sincerely thank Ms. Tangeswari and her colleagues for giving us a great time to know Malaysian culture more and to communicate with the people who work for the Embassy of Malaysia in Japan.
Through this visit, we were able to not only gain knowledge about Malaysia but also feel the warmth of the people at the embassy. We were nervous before visiting there because of our preconception that the Embassy is a place to issue visas and deal with refugees. However, we learned that the Embassy of Malaysia in Japan offers outreach programs to promote Malaysian culture to Japanese people. Therefore, we were impressed and moved by their hospitality. It was an unforgettable and valuable opportunity. This experience must be a great help in our future studies.
Lastly, we would like to express our gratitude for the people of the Malaysian Embassy again. We hope that you can stay safe in the covid-19 situation and we are also looking forward to seeing you again.
