英語教育センターでは、セルフスタディ・ルーム横のホワイトボードに英語教育センター教職員が週替わりで担当する「今週の言葉」を掲示しています。言語は英語のみならず、日本語の言葉もあり、英語教育センター教職員が感動したり、元気をもらったりした言葉を学生の皆さんへのメッセージも込めて掲示しています。2020年度より、学生の皆さんからも「今週の言葉」を募集し、掲示しており、今年度も募集を受け付けていますので、在学生の方は是非応募してみてください。
2021年度より、「今週の言葉」をブログという形で大学の公式ホームページに掲載し、2021年度は第9回まで掲載されています。2022年度も引き続き「今週の言葉」をブログで発信し、少しでも皆様の心が温かくなり、前向きになれるような言葉をお届けできたらと思います。「今週の言葉～selection～」を通して英語教育センター教職員の思いが少しでも皆様に届きますように。

Common sense is only local. The things we think of as normal are often only "normal" for a particular group of people.

This is something I often say, and is part of a textbook I wrote for students studying with me.
For many years I have been interested in culture and cultural differences. I am especially interested in how people can be in the same place at the same time surrounded by the same things, but notice different aspects of that situation and have very different interpretations of what is happening around them. This can happen with people who share a similar cultural background, but it can be even more pronounced when we have people from very different backgrounds communicating together.
People around the world can have very different understandings of even the most basic aspects of life. In some cultures dogs are seen as pets and may even been considered part of the family. In other places people would consider this a very strange idea, and would be repulsed by seeing a dog sleeping on a bed meant for humans. Some cultures value punctuality very much, but in other places the relationships a person has with others is considered far more important than a clock or calendar.
When you begin to realize there are many hidden differences and they relate to some of our deepest core beliefs about the world, it can bring a person to the realization that there are many things we assume to be true that are actually only a kind of agreed upon understanding of reality by a community of people. They are the things we think we know – the things we assume to be universally true – but are actually things we “forgot we learned.”
