Basics of Multicultural Coexistence Theory

With the progress of globalization, opportunities for interaction with people who have different languages and cultural backgrounds have increased. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, multicultural coexistence is defined as a state in which "people with diverse nationalities and ethnic backgrounds live together as community members, respecting each other's cultural differences and striving to establish equitable relationships." In this omnibus lecture, which covers various examples of multicultural coexistence in Japan and overseas, students will broadly study basic concepts, fundamental knowledge, multiple perspectives and methods for understanding different cultures, and other elements needed in order to strive for the realization of a society of mutual support steeped in diversity.

Basics of Representational Culture Theory

This omnibus lecture compares a wide range of representational cultures that includes visual media such as paintings, designs, photographs, videos and comic books from around the world as well as music, literature, mythology, festivals, rituals, rites of passage, fashion, theater, architecture, museums, and even women and class systems to interpret the nature and meanings of these forms of expression and draw associations with social and cultural context such as history, politics and religion. The lecture will provide an explanation of the concepts and theories of representational culture while covering both visual and non-visual examples.

Domestic and international training programs

Students will acquire the ability to think from a global perspective, identify social issues in various regions and proactively work towards their solution through the likes of visits to universities, NGOs, companies and other entities overseas and exchange, collaboration, etc. with local students.
