Characteristics of learning

icon
Students will be given an introduction to programming and mathematics slowly over time.
icon
Students will learn about information science and data science from the basics to application.
・For application, means of solving social issues through social sciences, human information science, etc.
・Education and skills for surviving in a digital and data society
icon
They will be able to try out what they learn in class immediately through a BYOD policy.
*BYOD (Bring Your Own Device): Bringing your own PC and using it in learning
icon
Through PBL (Problem-Based Learning), students will become familiar with social issues and means of solving them.
One of the unique characteristics of learning is that PBL classes are required subjects.

Distinctive classes

Digital Society and Ethics (1st Year)

Students will learn about information ethics and the laws forming social norms in order to play an active role in a digital society. When handling data and information or using the Internet, it is necessary to consider information ethics and norms such as privacy and copyrights. A correct understanding of legal systems is required as well. In this lecture, students will learn about the characteristics of a digital society, after which they will deepen their understanding through the case study method and examples of disputes for the purpose of becoming able to take necessary ethical actions.

Corporate Data Theory (3rd Year)

In information strategy at corporations, the focus has traditionally been placed on the question of “what kind of information system to develop.” In recent years, however, the questions of “what kind of data to collect and how to utilize it” has shifted to the center of strategic planning. In this class, students will learn how data is being utilized and how it should be utilized in the future at corporations such as those in the manufacturing, retail and service industries. Moreover, this class will also handle basic knowledge related to data and technological trends in recent years. Students will be required to submit reports on the themes and topics covered in class multiple times.

Machine Learning (3rd Year)

AI is attracting interest not only from information-related engineers but also from the general public. Its areas of application are increasing with each passing day. Students will study the technical essence and leading techniques for machine learning and deep learning for AI systems whose practical application is progressing, mainly those for photos and videos. In doing so, the class aims to have students become able to identify on their own the fundamental technologies of various services and systems broadly categorized as AI and determine whether they are truly effective as well as have students become able to discover familiar issues on their own and examine how machine learning can be used as a means of addressing those issues.

Physical Design Practical Exercise (3rd Year)

Students will learn the basic knowledge and skills necessary to expand the virtual world within a computer into the physical world and enable people and information to interact through physical entities. Students will engage in the practical study of physical computing using microcomputers, sensors, and actuators in the first half of the exercise and digital fabrication using 3D printers, laser cutters and CAD in the second half, and will tackle the production of physical designs with the application of their takeaways. Through these studies, students will outfit themselves with design capability that enables them to create new value and experiences through the advanced integration of virtual and physical spaces.

Problem-based LearningⅠ

Students will form teams consisting of at least one full-time faculty member and several students to tackle the detection and resolution of issues in IT systems in use at actual corporations. Companies will be asked to provide assignments, and students will work in groups to investigate solutions for those assignments and resolve them using those solutions. Conceivable examples of assignments include evaluations and assessments IT system user interfaces, security measures and the test production of systems and software.

Forums for learning

The new Trinity Hall facility has a space dedicated to The Faculty of Data Science that is equipped with the latest equipment necessary for learning in the Department. The PC classroom is equipped with 27-inch computers on each desk as well as a 100-inch large display at the front of the room. Also, in addition to the PC classroom, there is also an exercise room, laboratory and workshop. The workshop has 3D printers and laser cutters installed. While moving freely between the dedicated lounge space, exercise room, workshop and other areas during classes, students will interact with faculty and other students as they broaden their learning opportunities.
