Four years of learning Department of Child Welfare

About NDSU

Process of four years of learning

Curriculum

1st Year: Basics studied at the University

In class, students will study basic research methods at the University, starting with "general practical exercises" that consist of conducting surveys, presentations, discussions and more in small groups. Students will develop familiarity with methods of learning and thinking about things, experience presentations and gain more in the course of their close relationship with their peers.
Through the six required subjects covering research disciplines in the Department of Child Welfare, they will embark on a journey into the wide world of child welfare.

2nd Year: Expanded learning

Students will have increasing classes on specialized research subjects and opportunities for practical learning that ties into licenses and qualifications. For educator licenses, in the second semester of their 2nd Year, students will decide on a main license that will serve as the core (This will be tentatively determined for their two 1st-Year semesters.).
At the end of their 2nd Year, they will choose a discipline they want to investigate from six laboratories: psychology, inclusivity, education, culture, music and art.

3rd Year: Specialization and hands-on experience

3rd-Year students will commence their studies after being separately assigned to the laboratory that they individually selected. After learning about research methods in their respective disciplines through discussion-format "practical exercises on child welfare studies," they will split up into seminars under each faculty member and deepen their learning in small groups.
The main forms of educational, childcare and other practical training (elementary school education, kindergarten education and nursery practical training) are administered during students' 3rd Year.

4th Year: Graduate research

Students will further their research conducted through seminars and pursue graduate research based on their own individual themes. In preparing theses on psychology, students will utilize specialized survey and research methods. For those on education and the like, they will apply observations from hands-on experience interacting with children on the nursery and education frontlines as well as the likes of case study research. In the music and art laboratories, students may conduct their graduate research through performance and paintings, and presentations and exhibitions are put on by a large number of students.

1st Year

Students will outfit themselves with the basics of child welfare studies through diverse learning

2nd Year

Students will refine their sensitivity and knowledge while deepening their study of child welfare

3rd/4th Year

Students will further investigate child welfare while focusing primarily on the disciplines they are most interested in and, in their 4th Year, summarize their four years of study through their graduate research

Distinctive classes

General practical exercises

His class constitutes education for 1st-Year students of the Department of Child Welfare. Students will split up into small groups of four to five members to engage in diverse practical exercises that include reading groups, report preparation, research presentations and discussions, nurturing the ability they need in their university studies in the process. As the broaden their horizons through collaborative learning that will take them through "higher education theory," "theory of learning," "educational theory" and "human theory," students will proceed to elevate their inquisitive awareness.

Basic nursery and education practical training

Starting from their 1st Year, students will proceed to accumulate practical experience while interacting and playing with and learning alongside children through volunteer activities on the nursery and education frontlines. Opportunities for activities are diverse in nature and include play through song with two-year-old children and their parents before they enter the University-affiliated kindergarten and story time at elementary schools.

Practical exercises for training professions

The purpose of this class is to provide students with a summary of four years of learning pertaining to teaching and nursery professions and elevate their practical instructional capability on the frontlines of nurseries, kindergartens and schools. While proceeding to address issues through actual role-playing in groups and other exercises, students will outfit themselves with the theory and practice needed for the frontlines.
