英語教育センターでは、セルフスタディ・ルーム横のホワイトボードに英語教育センター教職員が週替わりで担当する「今週の言葉」を掲示しています。言語は英語のみならず、日本語の言葉もあり、英語教育センター教職員が感動したり、元気をもらったりした言葉を学生の皆さんへのメッセージも込めて掲示しています。昨年度より、学生の皆さんからも「今週の言葉」を募集し、掲示しており、今年度も募集を受け付けていますので、在学生の方は是非応募してみてください。
そして、新型コロナウイルス感染症の猛威により心身ともに不安な生活が続く中で、少しでも心が温かくなり、前向きになることができますよう、ブログでも「今週の言葉～selection～」を掲載したいと思います。英語教育センター教職員の思いが少しでも皆様に届きますように。
それでは、第3回は、Stephen Shrader先生が選んだ言葉です！

Without going out of the door, one can know everything under heaven.
Without peeping out of the window, one can see the working of heaven.
The further one goes out, the less one knows.

室からでなくても世のなかのことは分かり、
窓から覗かなくても天の理法は居ながらにして知られる。
遠くに出かければ出かけるほど、本当のことはわからなくなるのだ。(老子道徳経第47章より）
【Stephen Shrader先生からのコメント】
I became interested in Asia at a young age, and in high school and university spent a lot of my time studying the history of Japan, Korea, and China. Part of what I studied was also the religions of East Asia. I was especially interested in Taoism and Zen.
This quote is from the Tao Te Ching. The idea here in this quote is that it is possible to attain a kind of enlightened state by knowing oneself, and I think the original context of this quote makes this the original meaning. On the other hand, another way to interpret the last part of this quote is that when you travel you meet many people who have a different way of thinking, and you come to realize that things you thought you confidently knew could be wrong.
I like how this quote can be interpreted in these two completely different ways, so it is one of my favorites.
By the way, this part of the Tao Te Ching was also used in a song by The Beatles, “The Inner Light,” although the translation they used was a bit different. The song was written by George Harrison, who also drew a lot of inspiration from Indian culture.
